Spain Day 28 – Gijon

Not a lot of historical buildings is to be found in Gijon. Most of the buildings we saw and they considered ‘Antigua’ were less than 100 years old.

Gijon has a strong nautical heritage and a fisherman’s quarter in the town.

That aside they have some nice churches and a really lovely 2 mile beach save for the sea mist that was around all day. We captured some of the beach, the Church of San Pedro and the fisherman’s quarter plus part of the inside of San Pedro with some quite up to date biblical murals.

There was the Church of San Lorenzo with an interesting pergola of tile and timber in front. The church had been rebuilt but there was a chapel on the sea front ( currently being used as a shop) that dated back to the 1670s.

Finally we saw the Basilica Of the Sacred Heart of Jesus which had recently been consecrated by the Pope as a Pontifical Basilica in 2003.

Off to the beach at Llanes tomorrow for a chill before we go to Santander to catch the ferry home !!!
