Spain Day 23 – San Sebastián

San Sebastián is famous for its cuisine but even though we haven’t yet had that pleasure the city is still very beautiful set in a bay with some of the finest city beaches in the world.

One of these La Concha beach can be seen below as can the island of Santa Clara and the turret on top of Monte Igueldo.

On the other side of the bay is a wonderful 40 foot statue of Christ with his hand on his heart which was built in 1950. It is know as Sacred Heart Christ statue and behind which is the English Cemetery.

We had high hopes to see the renown Cathedral de Buen Pastor or the cathedral of the good shepherd but unfortunately it’s undergoing renovation, a surprise as it was only completed in 1897.

The Plaza de la Constitucion is the focal point of the city for events and was built in 1817.

The numbered windows of all in the square were boxes where bull fighting was seen from until the new ring was built outside the town.

We found the Church de San Vincente and it was not for the beauty of the church that was appealing but the bronze sculptures in the entrance.

These sculptures by Eduardo Belzunce, a native of San Sebastián, and a number of others have been exhibited in Paris in the Louvre Square for two years and have been returned to the city.

Back to San Sebastián tomorrow to see more and hopefully sample some of their cuisine.
