A lovely picture of Moais at sunset last night to brighten up the day.

We woke up to loads of emails bearing bad news about Coronavirus. A number of countries in S America followed Argentina, over a space of a few hours, to close their borders such that our trip is no longer possible. At one time Chile, Easter Island is a part, decided not only to close its borders to incoming folk but also to out going. Thus the morning was spent trying to re arrange flights to either the US or UK asap. Unfortunately the US was ruled out due to no medical cover so we tried to arrange flights to Santiago and then to the UK. Most were full but we found 2 seats on a BA flight to London on Wednesday but at an outrageous cost. Whether they will actually come is a question mark but we could be back in the UK on Thursday – a very sad end to a fabulous trip but we will be back!!!
We did manage to get out this afternoon for an activity which included a hike to two amazing caves – one of them with sea views……. we arrived at Abu Akivi to find 7 Moais representing the 7 original Polynesian sailors who came to the island at least 1000 years ago.

The first of the caves was fairly low with a front and back entrance and about two metres underground. This was situated in a field and therefore was probably used by farmers

The second cave was entered at the back of the cliffs and had an amazing sea view out of two ‘windows’

Tomorrow morning we hopefully leave to go to Santiago. Then a night at a hotel in the city and hopefully a flight to the UK Wednesday pm. The knee jerk responses of countries to this crisis means who knows when we might get back.
We hope you have enjoyed this blog and will continue to follow the second half of this trip probably next year.
So very sorry that you are having to cut your fabulous holiday short but I did wonder whether you would be able to fly back. Hope you manage to get back to the UK safely. Take care. love Sue
We were wondering how long you guys would be able to stay unaffected by the Pandemic that is creating havoc around the world. Good luck getting back to the UK safely and healthy.
