Day 20 Easter Islands

Today we had organised an all day walk starting at 9.45 and we walked around 17km. Our start point was the West coast of the Island and we finished on the NE side at the only sandy beach.

The fields are full of volcanic rock but the coast line was rugged and the waves crashed on the rocks

We came across a Moai which had been carved on the SE part of the island at the quarry area we saw yesterday and dragged over numerous hills and approx 10-12km of farmland – an amazing feat over 1000 years ago for something that weighed 60 or more tonnes.

Further on we came across a cavern where people sheltered from any human threat or dangerous weather.

Near the cave we came across this outline which looks like a boat and as it turns our was a boat house for fishermen.

Where there was an important house we found some carvings in the rocks of what looks like an owl.

Our walk continued to the end point which was the only sandy beach on the island as the rest are volcanic. There were also some Moais at the head of the beach.

Tonight we had some entertainment of local singers and musicians at the hotel

Tomorrow we are visiting the volcanic crater at the SW corner of the island and in the afternoon we are going back to see the quarry for most of the Moais on the island
