Another early start to catch the clearer skies. On our way to the entrance of the Canyon from the Valley we saw ash and gas clouds from the Sabancaya Volcano which has been continuously erupting since 1990.

At the entrance to the Canyon is a zinc and copper mine. You can see the spoil in front of the buildings

The highlight of the day was the visit to Colca Canyon some 5,800m or 19,000 ft. It is said to be deeper than the Grand Canyon at 3,800m or over 12,000ft.

The real highlight of the day and certainly the trip so far were the Condors which were out and about in their plenty.

With a wingspan of 7 to 9 feet the Condor can live for up to 70 years

We went for a hike down the side of the canyon to a town called Maca and saw these two statues – the first is of a ‘ falling in love’ ceremony and the second of an Inca repelling a Spanish conquistador.

We were welcomed home by a pack of baby and adult llamas and alpacas who live in the grounds of the hotel.
