We finally arrived in ……….. after 26 hours of travelling. Yes as some of you guessed we are in South America and more specifically Quito in Ecuador.
Today Tuesday we wandered around the old part of town as our hotel is in SanFrancisco Square, the centre of old Quito. The hotel is small and a renovated historical building completed some 9 years ago.
We then went to the Basilica in Independence Sq built very recently in 1909 and blessed by the Pope in 1985.
We wandered around the narrow streets with their small shops and very limited offering – a sign of their depressed economy.
It was a Fiesta and a day off for everyone. One of the traditions seems to be squirting foam at anybody and everybody whether friend or stranger – great fun for the bemused tourists!!
We then went up the cable car on a drizzly afternoon with low cloud. The background shows a small part of the city which is now the largest in Ecuador with a population of 2.8million of which 500,000 are some of the 2 million refugees from Venezuela.
Tomorrow is a tour of some other parts of the city and the ‘centre of the world’ which is the Equator going through Ecuador just north of Quito.
What a way to start your journey, but 26 hours! Happy big 50 to Lesley!
