Day 15 Colca Canyon

We left Arequipa early for a long drive to Colca Canyon. The scenery on the way was a mix of desert and high mountains and at times we were over 4700m (15,400ft) above sea level with some of the mountains over 5600m (19,000ft).

We carried on across the plains to Chivay, at the east end of the canyon. Unfortunately two people spoilt the view!

In the main Square there was an old church which was damaged in earthquake in 2016 called the Church of our Lady of the Assumption. Notice the cross on the hill behind which is lit up for festivals.

The river Colca is fast flowing and flows into the Pacific Ocean

On the Right side of the river are ruins of a pre Inca and Inca period village. Unfortunately the Spanish threw them out of their homes and sent them across the other side of the river to a town called Yankee

We got to or hotel overlooking the river and were persuaded to join a class making Pisco Sours.

Tomorrow we are staying in Colca Canyon and seeing the Valley of the Condors.
