Day 9 Lima

On our arrival late last we were persuaded by the hotel barman to try Pisco Sours. The only change of ingredient was the alcohol which is a distilled grape which has an alcohol content of 43% and the drink has a likeness to a margarita. PS we are drinking some as we write this blog.

Today’s guided trip was to see some of the sights in Lima. The square with the statue of General San Martin who fought for the independence of Peru in 1821.

In the central square Plaza de Armas we found the main government buildings of the Presidential Palace and the Town Hall. In one side of the square was the Cathedral and the Archbishops Palace.

Also down a side street was the old station which has now been transformed into Casa de la Literatura Peruana.

We went to the Museo de Larco which contained a private collection of pre Aztec gold ornament worn by women and men, jewellery made of semi precious stones and pots. Some 45000 pieces in total. The museum was opened in 1926 and its secret collection was of erotic figures made of clay in various sexual positions! The periods ranged from 1250 bc to 1500 ad. We could not take pictures but they had a beautiful garden of bougainvilleas.

As a little bit of good old England we found this statue outside the British Embassy

Tomorrow we are off to Cusco for more adventures.
