Spain Day 31 – Santander

Our last day before we dash to Bilbao to catch the morning ferry to Portsmouth.

We cycled back to the old part of town and enjoyed the most beautiful sunny day.

We caught sight of this building (Bank of Spain) but it was the combination of the tree colours with the grey/cream background of stone.

Our next port of call was the cathedral which was not the most impressive both inside and out but had a lovely quadrangle surrounded by cloisters. Also outside was a statue of the Virgin Mary to whom the church was named.

Out on the promenade overlooking the beach was this surprising building called Centro Botin and was a mixture of an art gallery on one side and offices the other.

Watch out for the Martians !!

Along from Centro Botin on the promenade were some sculptures from our good friend of yesterday Jose Cabo who seems to have his work all around Santander.

This work is called Los Raqueros which means the young urchins or scavengers. This is to commemorate the time in the 19th and early 20th century where boys would scavenge any coins or items dropped off ships and receive a reward. The statues are life size and the word Raqueros is still used in Santander today.

Well folks that’s it for another trip. Hope you have enjoyed the blog and not been too bored.

Happy travels to everyone.
